Did you know...
That half the chicken on sale in UK supermarkets is contaminated with campylobacter, which causes food poisoning?
That much of the chicken we eat has been illicitly injected with pork and beef proteins?
That ready-to-eat bagged salad has been washed in a solution of chlorine twenty times stronger than that of a swimming pool; that the processing destroys the vitamin content; that in one government study 13.5% of bagged salads were found to contain E coli bacteria?
That perhaps 30% of the workforce in the food industry is in the UK illegally, controlled by a violent mafia-style network of gangmasters and paid far less than the minimum wage?
That the average Briton has between 300 and 500 chemicals in their body not present 50 years ago, many of which are capable of hormone disruption in the womb?
That the incidence of obesity in the UK trebled between 1980 and 1998 to 21% of women and 17% of men. Almost one third of children are obese or overweight?
That 30-40% of cancers could be prevented through better diet?
A devastating expose of the state of the food production industry in Britain, Not On The Label will change the way we eat and the way we think about what we eat.
Looking at some of our most popular foods, the author sytematically exposes their production and marketing, showing how the food industry causes ill health, environmental damage, urban blight - and starves smallholders in Africa and Asia, and exploits illegal labourers in Britain.

228Personality and Psychological DisordersPersonality and Psychological Disordershealthy personality and temperament on the one hand and psychological disorders on the otherGordon Claridge and Caroline Davis27/12/2002
The assumption that there is a significant connection between normal psychological and biological differences and the development of psychological disorders has grown in recent years and research in this area has developed rapidly. Written by psychologists with expertise in both the areas of abnormal and differential psychology, this textbook aims to integrate evidence and ideas from healthy personality and temperament on the one hand and psychological disorders on the other. This is achieved by viewing personality traits as predispositions to disorder, and by questioning how far the causes of various disorders can be seen as an extension or exaggeration of processes underlying normal personality or temperament. These main themes are discussed using a biological perspective, based on the theory that personality can be deconstructed into a number of basic dimensions (of biological origin) that also act as vulnerability factors for disorder. This is a second level textbook for undergraduate students of psychology, but it can also be used by health professionals and their trainees, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and nurses.

3203Pure, White And Deadly: How sugar is killing us and what we can do to stop it Pure, White And Deadly: How sugar is killing us and what we can do to stop it Pure, White And Deadly: How sugar is killing us and what we can do to stop it John Yudkin19/12/2012
Hear from the author's son, Professor Michael Yudkin, and US obesity expert Professor Robert Lustig - whose recent work has rekindled interest in the dangers of sugar - at either of two special events hosted by FAB Research, aimed at policymakers, professionals and the general public.
Sugar. It's killing us. Why do we eat so much of it? What are its hidden dangers?
In 1972, when British scientist John Yudkin first proved that sugar was bad for our health, he was ignored by the majority of the medical profession and rubbished by the food industry. We should have heeded his warning.
Today, 1 in 4 adults in the UK are overweight
There is an epidemic of obese six month olds around the globe
Sugar consumption has tripled since World War II
Using everyday language and a range of scientific evidence, Professor Yudkin explores the ins and out of sugar, from the different types - is brown sugar really better than white? - to how it is hidden inside our everyday foods, and how it is damaging our health.
Brought up-to-date by childhood obesity expert Dr Robert Lustig M.D., his classic exposé on the hidden dangers of sugar is essential reading for anyone interested in their health, the health of their children and the health of modern society.
'Arguably the leading nutritionist of his time' Guardian
'Yudkin was far ahead of his time with his idea of nutrition as a subject of great breadth: not just the study of the composition of foods, but the importance of enjoying a variety of fresh foods, and the recognition of the psychological and social factors that cause us to choose certain foods and avoid others' Independent
'Worldwide, around 180million tonnes of refined sugar is produced each year and the UK market alone is worth nearly £1billion. Little wonder that no one listened to eminent nutritionist Professor John Yudkin when he called sugar 'pure, white and deadly' back in 1972 and quite rightly warned of the links between excessive consumption and heart disease' Catherine Collins, Principal Dietician, St George's Hospital
John Yudkin (8 August 1910 - 12 July 1995) was a British physiologist and nutritionist, whose books include This Slimming Business, Eat Well, Slim Well and This Nutrition Business. He became internationally famous with his book Pure, White and Deadly, first published in 1972, and was one of the first scientists to claim that sugar was a major cause of obesity and heart disease.
Robert H. Lustig, M.D. has spent the past sixteen years treating childhood obesity and studying the effects of sugar on the central nervous system and metabolism. He is the Director of the UCSF Weight Assessment for Teen and Child Health Program and also a member of the Obesity Task Force of the Endocrine Society. His YouTube video lecture Sugar: The Bitter Truth has received over two million hits, he recently appeared on the BBC 2 documentary The Men Who Made Us Fat and his book Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease is being published in January 2013.

614Reasons and Remedies Reasons and Remedies Reasons and Remedies Patricia Sims01/06/2002
Reasons and Remedies is a highly readable, ground-breaking, holistic approach to children's difficulties. It is based on the consistent clinical findings and insights of an experienced speech and language therapist and takes the reader on a journey of discovery. It contains a comprehensive personality checklist. Rich in case studies which consider personality traits (from birth), it shows how problems or conditions can arise, why they overlap one another and why it is imperative to consider the role played by tension or anxiety (even when it is within normal limits). Speech and language difficulties, ADHD, autism, dyslexia, behavioural and social problems, stammering, Tourette syndrome and dyspraxia are seen in a new light which enables the author to offer remedial approaches based on thorough understanding, including a simple, new preventative and remedial approach to literacy difficulties. Understanding of a problem is enhanced by an improved understanding of other, related conditions.
Shows how tension/anxiety-related personality traits lead to developmental and mental health problems, and suggests remedies.

This book describes what schizophrenia is really like, how the illness progresses and the treatments that have been applied. It also summarizes the most up-to-date knowledge available about the biological bases of this disorder. Finally, it attempts to give some idea of what it is like to have schizophrenia and what this disorder tells us about the relationship between the mind and the brain.
Schizophrenia is the archetypal form of madness. It is a common disorder and has a devastating effect on sufferers and their families - patients typically hear voices in their heads and hold bizarre beliefs, thouh the schizophrenic patient presented to the public in sensational press reports and lurid films bears little resemblance to reality of the illness. This book describes what schizophrenia is really like, how the illness progresses, and the treatments that have been applied. It also summarizes the most up-to-date knowledge available about the biological bases of this disorder. 987Shopped: The Shocking Power of British SupermarketsShopped: The Shocking Power of British SupermarketsShopped: The Shocking Power of British SupermarketsJoanna Blythman09/08/2006
An elegant demolition of the supermarket miracle, this book charts the impact that supermarkets have had on every aspect of our lives and culture. Did you know! / Almost 50 per cent of supermarket fruit and vegetables contain pesticide residues? / UK supermarkets make 40p on every AGBP1 spent on bananas while plantations workers are paid just 1p? / Supermarkets instill a climate of fear amongst their suppliers? / Every time a supermarket opens the local community loses on average 276 jobs? In the 1970s, British supermarkets had only 10 per cent of the UK's grocery spend. Now they swallow up 80 per cent, influencing how we shop, what we eat, how we spend our leisure time, how much rubbish we generate, even the very look of our physical environment. Award-winning food writer Joanna Blythman investigates the enormous impact that these big box retailers are having on our lives. She meets the farmers who are selling food to supermarkets for less than they need to survive and the wholesalers who have been eliminated from the supply chain; she travels to suburban retail parks to meet the teenagers and part-timers who stack our shelves and reveals the hoops third world suppliers must jump through to earn supermarket contracts. This thought-provoking, witty and sometimes chilling voyage of discovery is sure to make you think twice before you enthusiastically reach for that supermarket trolley again.
521Smart Fats: How Dietary Fats and Oils affect Mental, Physical and Emotional IntelligenceSmart Fats: How Dietary Fats and Oils affect Mental, Physical and Emotional Intelligenceresearch into the link between dietary fat and the brainMichael A Schmidt24/10/1997
Michael Schmidt, a clinical scientist specializing in molecular nutrition, describes current research into the link between dietary fat and the brain, and how the balance of essentially fatty acids in the blood influences neurological health.
In short, he argues that adjusting your diet can help increase concentration and fight off disease.
Readers' reviews from Amazon:
This is the best book on fats I've read. It's not written in a "pop" style like so many other nutrition books, but is simply well written and comprehensive. After reading this book I will never, ever touch another donut for as long as I live! Technical details that other authors apparently thought were too difficult for the average reader are covered in this book. But that doesn't make the book difficult to read. On the contrary, I had a hard time putting it down.
Dr. Michael Schmidt has done a wonderful job assembling all the information on how diet and fats in particular affect brain function. If we followed the excellent suggestions of this book, I wager there would be less Alzheimer's, better memory in aging adults, and smarter kids. Excellent job! Highly recommended for anyone who wants to maximize their brain health and overall health, and absolute must reading for all expecting mothers!

Reader's reviews from Amazon
Best, most comprehensive nutrition summary I've come across
Not only does this summary provide a comprehensive review of traditional nutrition, it also provides information on less traditional supplements and discussion of current nutritional issues. I highly recommend this book for both lay people and professional nutritionists.
The definitive comprehensive nutrition reference
For those looking for the omnibus, cover-all reference book on nutrition, this is it. It is a thoroughly comprehensive examination of nutrition from just about every possible facet. Dr. Haas incorporates most of the more modern and alternative thinking on nutrition, even going so far as to examine environmental and spiritual issues, while avoiding the extreme, faddish ideas either of the medical establishment or the alternative fringe. He really does seem to have taken the time to weigh the value of studies done in both the mainstream and alternative research communities and brought together the clear, probable truths from both camps. And by the same token, he provides warnings against the doubtful claims of both sides.
This is not a book, however, for those looking for a quick, capsule synopsis of a dietary approach. Those people might be better served with Patrick Holford's "Optimum Nutrition Bible" which provides much of the same information in a condensed form. Rather this book is ideal for those looking to make an informed decision based on their own choices.

Prof Martha Herbert gave a keynote presentation at the 'Changing the Course of Autism' conference that took place in Edinburgh, UK, in June 2013. She was asked to give an overview of what she'd be talking about at the opening ceremony for the event, at the Scottish Parliament. You can watch the video of this here.
Move beyond conventional thinking about autism . . .
After years of treating patients and analyzing scientific data, prominent Harvard Medical School researcher and clinician Dr. Martha Herbert offers a revolutionary new view of autism. Autism is not hardwired into a child’s genes and destined to remain fixed forever, as parents are often told. Instead, Dr. Herbert approaches autism as a collection of challenges, many of which can be tackled in a deliberate and methodical way. Her recommendations aim to provide optimal nutrition, reduce toxic exposures, shore up the immune system, reduce stress, and open the door to learning and creativity—all by understanding and truly meeting your child’s needs.
Drawing from the newest research, technologies, and insights, as well as inspiring case studies of both children and adults, Dr. Herbert guides you through small changes that can create a substantial difference in your loved one with autism. A paradigm-changing book that offers hope and healing for the millions of people with autism in their lives, The Autism Revolution shows that there’s plenty you can do every day to reduce vulnerability, feel better and live life to its fullest.
231The Bipolar Child (revised)The Bipolar Child (revised)understand and manage Bipolar Disorder in childrenDemetri and Janice Papolos01/10/2002
This book was first published in 1999, with the subtitle: "The definitive and reassuring guide to childhood's most misunderstood disorder". It still remains probably the best single text for any parents, teachers, doctors or other health professionals seeking to recognise, understand and manage Bipolar Disorder in children. It explains how this condition differs from the usual adult form of Bipolar (manic-depressive) Disorder, and most importantly - it emphasises the very strong similarities, as well as the important differences, between this condition and ADHD, with which it is frequently confused. Divided clearly into sections dealing with the clinical profile, diagnosis, relevant research, medication and other management methods, this book provides an absolute wealth of accessible information and useful insights to guide both personal choices and clinical practice.
One reader's review from Amazon:
This book is a great reference guide for any parent, teacher or childminder experiencing life with a Bipolar child. The Bipolar Child is well presented and clearly understood. Included are many helpful lists to ensure accurate diagnosis, treatment, and care. All medical information is relayed with the aim of helping parents to ensure effective treatment for their children. Most importantly, parts of the book are devoted to discussions about the emotional turmoil that caring for a Bipolar Child can bring, and how parents and children can cope most effectively. The book is filled with families' stories that do a beautiful job providing comfort and inspiration to others. Parts of this book are very much directed to the US, but I found the complete book a great help to myself, a mother to a bipolar son.
1089The Brain Diet: The Connection Between Nutrition, Mental Health, and IntelligenceThe Brain Diet: The Connection Between Nutrition, Mental Health, and Intelligence (Revised and Expanded)Logan - The Brain Diet: The Connection Between Nutrition, Mental Health, and Intelligence - 2007Alan C. Logan01/03/2007
In this second, expanded edition of the best-selling The Brain Diet, Dr. Alan C. Logan incorporates the latest research on the connection between nutrition, mental health, and intelligence. Most people today know that good nutrition and good health are related and that poor nutrition frequently leads to cardiovascular disease and cancer. Unfortunately, few people realize that it also is an underlying factor in other medical conditions, such as depression, anxiety, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, migraine headaches, ADHD, and much more. This is startling when one realizes that researchers have found that today more than 50 percent of the vegetables in most people's diets consists of the trimmings on a hamburger and a side of fries.
The Brain Diet explains the connection between diet and mental health, as well as its importance for realizing the full potential of our intelligence. It shows how poor nutrition hinders the development of our children's intelligence and how it adversely affects mental health and success.
Despite being just 2 percent of total adult weight, the human brain demands an enormous amount of energy. An ample flow of blood is required for us to think, to reason, to create art and music, to develop technology, and to perform complex work. As The Brain Diet explains the science behind how our brains function, it also provides suggestions for a healthy diet.
Included are the basics of a brain-healthy diet, brain-healthy recipes, helpful charts, and food supplements that enhance our mental function (and how those supplements work). This revolutionary new way of looking at mental health and intelligence gives new meaning to the adage "You are what you eat."
About the Author Alan C. Logan is a member of the Harvard Medical School's Mind-Body Medical Institute. A magna cum laude graduate from the State University of New York, he was the valedictorian of his graduating class at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. The nutrition editor of the International Journal of Naturopathic Medicine, his articles have been published in Nutrition, Arthritis and Rheumatology, American Journal of Hypertension, Medical Hypotheses, Hospital Physician, and Medical Clinics of North America. He lives in Westchester County, New York.

232The Complete Guide to Food Allergy and IntoleranceThe Complete Guide to Food Allergy and Intolerancesuspect you may suffer from food allergies, and you are looking for a clear and comprehensive guide to self-treatmentJonathan Brostoff, MD and Linda Gamlin12/02/1998
Reviews from Amazon
'5 stars' are not enough - this book is the gold standard!
The best and most comprehensive book I have read on this subject - and it works superbly for however you wish to use it!
If you are a sufferer, or suspect you may suffer from food allergies, and you are looking for a clear and comprehensive guide to self-treatment, this is the book for you.
If you are a practitioner, and are looking for a clear and detailed understanding of these issues, in order to best advise your clients (and my advice would be 'buy this book') this is the book for you
If you are a teacher, and looking for help for a clear way to present information on the subject, this is for you.
If you are fascinated by the politics of the food industry - this is for you - I can't begin to express how horrified I was to discover the extent of the use of food colourings, linked with potentially highly dangerous effects, which have been banned all over Europe and the USA, but which are allowed in the UK. There are some very suspect actions taken by the food industry in this country.
If you admire clearly presented scientific writing, this is for you.
A great read, a great reference text, a survivors kit for many. Beg, borrow, or preferably BUY this book.
David Boyce, of the National Eczema Society, offers the following review:
Here is a sound scientific covarage of all aspects of this sometimes controversial area. Professor Brostoff is a leading expert in the field. The book represents excellent value for anyone wishing to get to grips with this subject in a thoroughly scientific and in-depth manner. The authors call into question with weight and conciseness some of the dubious and unscientific 'tests' for 'food intolerance' and explain the methods of known reliability. It is hoped that the book may be updated as evidence emerges for the efficacy, or lack of it, of newer ELISA tests for IgG-mediated intolerances. The book is inexpensive for so authoritative a tome, but it must be said that the typography is not easy on the eye. A future edition with a better layout in a different typface, even if more expensive, would be welcomed! The best book on the subject, though.
